CEQ Anti-Oxidant Serum

The vitamin C that sits closest to the research. 15% L-ascorbic acid at pH 3.5 with ferulic acid and tocopherol — the C, E and ferulic architecture from the Lin study — over a base of ectoin and centella, from a brand founded by a Korean dermatologist. It is the most effective option on my list, and the least forgiving.

What it does

The real benefit

Pure L-ascorbic acid is the only form of vitamin C with a deep clinical record, and 15% clears the roughly 8% threshold Pinnell's absorption work identified for a biologically meaningful effect. Pairing it with ferulic acid and tocopherol is the combination Lin et al. (2005) found roughly doubled photoprotection, from about fourfold to about eightfold. Ectoin adds protection against particulate pollution and visible light, which is better supported than most pollution claims. Used every morning under sunscreen, this is the strongest antioxidant step available to a home routine.

What it does not

The honest limits

It does not replace sunscreen — it mops up the free radicals that get through, it does not stop them landing. It will not clear pigmentation on its own, and it will not work quickly: the studies behind it measure over twelve weeks. The trade for the potency is real. At pH 3.5 it stings on compromised skin and it oxidises once opened, and the tocopherol dose sits around 0.1% where the Lin study used 1% — this is the architecture at a fraction of the vitamin E. It also contains citrus junos peel oil, so it is not for anyone avoiding essential oils.

Ritual

How to use

Morning only, on clean skin, before anything else — low-pH L-ascorbic acid absorbs best with nothing in its way, so no toner or essence ahead of it. Four or five drops over a dry face. Give it a couple of minutes, then cream, then sunscreen, always last and always generously. Never in the same session as your retinol.
