Ingredient
Azelaic Acid
A naturally occurring acid found in wheat, rye, and barley — and one of the few actives that targets acne, redness, and dark spots at the same time. It works by slowing the overproduction of pigment and reducing inflammation, making it especially useful for post-acne marks and rosacea-prone skin. Look for 10–16% on the label; it can be used morning or night and doesn't make your skin more sensitive to the sun.

Ingredient
Suitable for
Best for acne-prone skin with dark spots — azelaic acid addresses both active breakouts and the marks they leave behind, without increasing sun sensitivity.
Also suitable for acne-prone skin, oily skin, sensitive skin and uneven skin tone.

Ingredient combination
Combinations that work
- NiacinamideClearing
Both reduce breakouts and the marks they leave, by different routes — azelaic acid slows pigment production and inflammation, niacinamide regulates sebum. Neither increases sun sensitivity, so both can be worn in the morning.
- Tranexamic Acid (TXA)Brightening
Two different points in the same pathway: azelaic acid inhibits tyrosinase directly, tranexamic acid interrupts the signal that activates the melanocyte. Studied together for melasma and stubborn post-acne marks.
- CeramidesTolerance
Azelaic acid at 10–16% commonly stings for the first few weeks. A ceramide layer under or over it reduces that without diluting the effect — often the difference between stopping and staying on it.
Combinations to avoid
Azelaic acid already works on the surface and on pigment; adding an AHA to the same session adds exfoliation, not clearing. Alternate days.
Both target breakouts, and using them together mostly adds irritation to skin that is already inflamed. Alternate, or keep azelaic acid for the morning and BHA for the evening.
Clinically the two work well together over 8 to 12 weeks — but applied at full strength in the same session they measurably raise water loss within 48 hours. Azelaic acid in the morning, retinol at night.
