Retinol
Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A that converts into retinoic acid in the skin to regulate cell turnover, collagen synthesis, and melanin production. The result is faster shedding of dead skin cells, reduced fine lines, and more even tone over time. Effective concentrations range from 0.025% for beginners to 0.5–1% for experienced users — higher isn’t always better, and irritation increases sharply above 1%.

Combinations that work
- NiacinamideTolerance
Niacinamide raises the skin's own ceramide production and calms the inflammatory response retinol triggers in its first weeks. In controlled testing it measurably reduced retinol-induced dryness and stinging without blunting the result.
- SqualaneTolerance
Squalane is close to the skin's own sebum, so it cushions retinol without diluting it. Applied afterwards it reduces the flaking of the adjustment period.
- Snail MucinTolerance
Applied first, snail mucin leaves a hydrating film that lets retinol absorb evenly and reduces the sting of the first weeks. Wait two to five minutes between the layers.
Combinations to avoid
Both work best at different pH levels. L-ascorbic acid needs a pH below 3.5; retinol degrades faster in acidic environments. Layering them increases irritation without adding benefit. Vitamin C in the morning, retinol at night.
Layering an AHA over retinol doesn't accelerate results — it over-exfoliates the barrier. Cells are shed faster than they can be replaced, and the outcome is sensitisation and redness. Alternate nights.
Both accelerate turnover, and salicylic acid's low pH also destabilises retinol. Together they exceed what the skin can rebuild in a night. Alternate nights, or BHA in the morning and retinol in the evening.
