Ingredient
Bakuchiol
A plant extract derived from Psoralea corylifolia seeds, often called the gentler alternative to retinol. It visibly reduces fine lines, improves firmness, and evens out skin tone -- without the irritation or peeling retinol can cause. Look for 0.5-1% in formulations for clinically supported results.

Ingredient
Suitable for
Best suited to sensitive or reactive skin types seeking anti-aging results -- bakuchiol offers comparable firming and line-reducing effects to retinol, with significantly lower risk of irritation.
Also suitable for sensitive skin, dry skin, oily skin and acne-prone skin.

Combinations that work
- NiacinamideSmoothing
Bakuchiol reaches retinol-like results through a different pathway, without the receptor irritation; niacinamide supports the barrier while it works. The combination to try if retinol was not tolerated.
- PeptidesFirming
Both signal for collagen without exfoliating and without needing a low pH, so they can share a step. A firming routine for skin that does not tolerate retinoids or acids.
- Vitamin CProtecting
Unlike retinol, bakuchiol is photostable — it can be used in the morning. Under vitamin C and sunscreen it adds antioxidant support during the hours the damage actually happens.
Combinations to avoid
They are not incompatible, and studies have combined them — but in the same session they compound irritation without a clear extra result. Bakuchiol is photostable, so use it in the morning and keep retinol for the evening.
Bakuchiol is chosen for tolerability. Layering an AHA over it in the same routine removes exactly the advantage you selected it for.
