Ingredient
Hydrolyzed Sponge
An ingredient derived from freshwater sponge (Spongilla lacustris) that contains microscopic silica needles -- invisible to the eye -- which gently exfoliate dead skin cells and open tiny channels that allow active ingredients to absorb more deeply. The result is smoother texture, tighter-looking pores, and visibly brighter skin without the irritation of chemical exfoliants. Typically used at 5-10% in serums and creams; best applied 1-3 times a week rather than daily.

Ingredient
Suitable for
Oily and combination skin looking to improve texture and pore appearance -- the micro-exfoliation effect is most visible on skin with active congestion, and noticeably improves brightness from early use.
Also suitable for oily skin, combination skin, normal skin and sensitive skin.

Combinations that work
- Hyaluronic AcidDelivery
Sponge spicules open temporary micro-channels in the surface layer, so whatever follows penetrates further. Hyaluronic acid is the safest thing to send through them — hydration, not another active.
- PanthenolRepairing
Spicules exfoliate mechanically and leave the surface briefly more permeable. Panthenol applied afterwards shortens the recovery and reduces the redness that follows.
- PeptidesDelivery
The micro-channels spicules create let larger molecules like peptides reach further than they otherwise would. Apply the peptide immediately after, while the channels are still open.
Combinations to avoid
Spicules open micro-channels in the surface layer; retinol applied through them reaches further and stings more than intended. Separate them by at least 24 to 48 hours.
Mechanical and chemical exfoliation in one session is a predictable route to a compromised barrier. Spicules have already exfoliated — an AHA the same night is a second pass on skin that has had one.
Same reasoning as with an AHA: the spicules have already exfoliated and left the surface briefly more permeable. Give it 24 to 48 hours before a BHA.
