Evening Barrier Repair Routine

Three steps for skin that has been asked to tolerate too much. Built on centella and panthenol, and not much else.

Who it's for

For skin that stings when actives go on, feels tight after cleansing, or is still recovering from a course of exfoliation. Three steps, no acids and no retinoids, because a barrier that is already compromised does not need another instruction.

What this routine is actually built on

Four ingredients do most of the work here. Everything else in these formulas is there to carry them, keep them stable, or make them pleasant to use.

01 · 04
Centella Asiatica

Centella asiatica (also called CICA or tiger grass) is a plant-based active known for its soothing and repairing properties. It calms irritation, accelerates skin healing, and strengthens the skin barrier. Rich in madecassoside and asiaticoside, it's a staple in K-beauty for post-procedure care, redness relief, and hydration

Panthenol

A lightweight moisturizing ingredient that pulls water into the skin and holds it there, while also soothing irritation and supporting the skin's natural repair process. Compatible with virtually every other skincare ingredient and suitable for all skin types. Effective from 1%, with most products using 1–5% for hydration and barrier repair benefits.

Madecassoside

The active compound in Centella Asiatica (also called cica), a tropical plant used in Asian skincare for centuries. It calms redness, accelerates barrier repair, and reduces inflammation — making it particularly effective after breakouts, irritation, or over-exfoliation. Look for 0.5-2% in dedicated cica serums and creams; it works best alongside other centella compounds like asiaticoside.

Squalane

A lightweight oil that mimics skin's own natural lipids to hydrate and reinforce the moisture barrier without feeling greasy or blocking pores. Originally derived from shark liver, it's now sustainably sourced from sugarcane or olive oil — non-comedogenic, stable, and suitable for all skin types including oily and acne-prone. Works at any concentration; even small amounts provide noticeable softening.

The ritual of care

3 steps, in order

01Oil Cleanser

SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Light Cleansing Oil

Centella Asiatica
Why this one

SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Light Cleansing Oil — centella asiatica in a light ester-oil base with jojoba and squalane. The oil phase dissolves sunscreen and sebum on contact; jojoba and squalane keep the rinse from stripping. Centella is here from the first step, not added at the end. Perfect for skin that tightens the moment it meets a foaming cleanser.

How to layer

Three or four pumps onto dry skin with dry hands. Massage for about a minute over the areas you applied sunscreen. Add a little water, keep going until it turns milky, then rinse. Step 2 follows straight away — this one is not meant to be the whole cleanse.

02Water-based Cleanser

PURITO Mighty Bamboo Panthenol Cleanser

Panthenol
Why this one

PURITO Mighty Bamboo Panthenol Cleanser — panthenol and allantoin in a bamboo-water base. Panthenol supports barrier recovery, allantoin calms; neither is doing the cleaning, which is the point. It removes what the oil left behind without leaving skin alkaline for the next hour. Perfect for the second cleanse on skin that reacts to sulfates.

How to layer

A small amount, lathered in wet hands before it touches the face. Lukewarm water, about twenty seconds, no washcloth. Pat with a towel but stop short of dry — step 3 goes onto skin that is still damp.

SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Asiatica 100 Ampoule

Madecassoside
Why this one

SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Asiatica 100 Ampoule — centella asiatica extract carrying madecassoside and asiaticoside, and very little else. Madecassoside is the fraction most associated with calming visible redness; asiaticoside supports repair. A short list makes it far easier to tell what your skin is reacting to. Perfect for a barrier that is still flaring.

How to layer

Two or three drops pressed onto damp skin, not rubbed. Give it a minute to settle before anything occlusive goes on top. If your skin is actively reacting, every other evening is often enough to start.

Not sure this is your routine?

Two questions. Then you'll know.

Your skin type, and what you are actually trying to fix — then the routine that fits, instead of the one that is trending.
