Morning Routine for Dullness and Pigmentation

A routine that works on hyperpigmentation without provoking the skin it is working on — gentle enough for sensitive skin because the vitamin C is a stable derivative, not pure ascorbic acid.

Who it's for

Sensitive skin that has pigmentation to deal with, and has been told the two are incompatible. Spots left behind by old blemishes, patches from sun you did not think was strong, a general flatness that sleep does not fix. This is the routine to start once your barrier is steady — if things still sting, the evening barrier routine comes first.

What this routine is actually built on

One active does the brightening. The other three are here to make it safe to keep using — which, on sensitive skin, is the whole difference between a routine that works and one you abandon in a fortnight.

01 · 04
Peptides

Short chains of amino acids that signal your skin to produce more collagen and elastin — the proteins that keep it firm and resilient. Some types also slow the muscle movements that deepen expression lines over time. Look for named peptides like Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1 or Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 in the top half of the ingredient list; results build gradually over 4–12 weeks of daily use.

Steps 01
02 · 04
Vitamin C

Vitamin C — most commonly formulated as L-ascorbic acid, ascorbyl glucoside, or ethyl ascorbic acid. It stabilizes collagen fibers, which is why consistent use can visibly improve firmness and fine lines over time. It is effective for fading dark spots and evening out tone. Concentration to look for: from 5% for sensitive skin to potent 23% serums for targeted correction.

Steps 02
03 · 04
Rice Extract

An extract from rice grains or rice bran, often used in fermented form in K-beauty to amplify its brightening and softening properties. It gradually evens skin tone, hydrates deeply, and offers a gentle approach to brightening without the sensitivity risk of stronger actives. Look for rice extract or fermented rice filtrate in the top half of the ingredient list — I'm From Rice Toner uses 77.78% rice extract.

Centella Asiatica

Centella asiatica (also called CICA or tiger grass) is a plant-based active known for its soothing and repairing properties. It calms irritation, accelerates skin healing, and strengthens the skin barrier. Rich in madecassoside and asiaticoside, it's a staple in K-beauty for post-procedure care, redness relief, and hydration

4 steps, in order

01Eye care

COSRX The Peptide Collagen Hydrogel Eye Patch

4-Peptide Complex
Why this one

COSRX The Peptide Collagen Hydrogel Eye Patch — a 4-peptide complex plus low-molecular-weight collagen and niacinamide. Each peptide does a different job — signalling collagen, easing micro-tension, targeting puffiness. It's a stack, not a hero-ingredient product. Perfect for puffed morning eyes.

How to layer

One patch under each eye on clean skin, before anything else. Twenty minutes while you get on with the morning, then press in what remains rather than rinsing. Step 2 goes on afterwards, over the whole face including where the patches sat.

02Treatment

Arencia Vitamin C Booster Shot

Vitamin C 5%
Why this one

Arencia Vitamin C Booster Shot — a stable vitamin C derivative at 5%, with niacinamide and glutathione. Niacinamide interrupts melanin transfer to the skin cell while the vitamin C works upstream on melanin production — two points in the same pathway. Perfect for uneven, tired-looking skin that wants brightness without irritation.

How to layer

Two or three drops on clean skin, pressed not rubbed. Give it a minute before step 3. If vitamin C is new to you, every other morning for the first fortnight is enough.

03Moisturizer

I'm From Rice Cream

Ceramide NP
Why this one

I'm From Rice Cream — 41% rice bran water built around Ceramide NP. No niacinamide in this one, on purpose — this step's only job is sealing the barrier, because a compromised barrier is what turns inflammation into pigmentation in the first place. Perfect as the buffer that makes step 2 sustainable.

How to layer

An almond-sized amount, warmed between palms and pressed on in sections. Two minutes before sunscreen — rushing this is what makes SPF pill.

04Sunscreen · non-negotiable

SKIN1004 Centella Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum

Centella Asiatica 0.98%
Why this one

SKIN1004 Centella Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum SPF50+ PA++++ — centella asiatica at 9,800 ppm (0.98%) in a photostable organic filter system, no white cast. PA++++ is the UVA rating, and UVA is what deepens pigmentation over time. Without this step, you are undoing steps 1–3.

How to layer

Two finger-lengths for face and neck. Always last, over the cream, never mixed into it. Reapply at lunch if you are by a window.

Not sure this is your routine?

Two questions. Then you'll know.

Your skin type, and what you are actually trying to fix — then the routine that fits, instead of the one that is trending.
